Meal Charging Policy

The Huron School District Food Services Department has an established meal charge policy in place for all students. The purpose of having a meal charging policy enables our schools to establish consistent and clear food service account procedures throughout the district. It allows the district to maintain fiscal integrity and solvency of the food service department while providing meal options that meet the nutritional needs of our students. We understand that although efforts to keep a child’s food service account in a positive standing are there, we understand that there are times where parents may forget or other unforeseen circumstances can occur. Meal charging shall be used as a temporary solution only and do not address a parent/guardian’s inability to pay. In those instances, an application for free or reduced meal benefits should be completed and turned in to the food service office. Students at all schools may charge three full lunches to their food service account. Once the student’s account goes negative, a parent/guardian will receive notification of the account balance with the expectation that the outstanding balance be paid in full. If a balance becomes exceptionally large with no expectation to pay by the parent, a student may be charged for an alternative lunch as a result until balance is paid in full. If a student’s balance becomes negative, we may also restrict a la carte purchasing as well.

The Food Service Department has set goals to ensure the success of the program and they are as follows:

  • To provide our students with a healthy, flavorful meal.

  • To treat all students with dignity and confidentiality in the serving line.

  • To ensure that no child goes hungry.

  • To foster open and clear communication with staff, students and parent/guardians.

  • To maintain the charge policy consistently throughout the district regarding meal charges.

  • ​The Huron School Food Service Program is dedicated to providing students with a high quality product and service that meets the nutritional guidelines of the National School Lunch Program while accommodating student preferences.

  • Changes in school lunch menus went into effect July 1, 2012 as a result of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. The Act is federal legislation aimed at fighting childhood obesity and childhood hunger, and ensures that school provided meals are healthy, well balanced and provide students all the nutrition they need to succeed at school. The Act includes the following key changes that will modify school menus as follows:

    • Schools are now required to offer minimum quantities of both fruits and vegetables every day to help ensure children increase their intake of these healthy food choices.

    • New lunch menus will also emphasize variety with a weekly requirement for different types of vegetables: dark green, red/orange, dry beans and peas, starchy and all other vegetables.

    • Beginning in 2014, all grains offered must be 100% whole-grain rich.

    • Daily and weekly ranges (minimum and maximum amounts) of grains and me at/meat alternate foods.

    • Restrictions on milk products sold in school cafeteria – only fat-free or 1% milk is permitted. Flavored milk must be fat-free.

    • Schools must adhere to a calorie range, as well as restrictions on trans fat, saturated fat, and sodium.

  • We recognize that these standards will require some adjustments on the part of students and their families. You will note that meal pricing has not change (although some ala carte items may be increased slightly), which will help to keep school meals a good value and a convenience for busy families.   • Elementary breakfast and lunch menus are sent home monthly, junior high and high school menus are posted in the buildings. Menus and Lunch Prices are available on this site as well.

  • Students may be eligible for free or reduced price lunches depending on family income. Applications are available in all of our schools.
